Today During Talking Circle

Today in the Talking Circle, we opened our circle by sharing how we were feeling today.  Pam taught us about the 3 other medicines in the Indigenous culture.

The first medicine that she showed us today was CEDAR.  She taught us that cedar can be put in tea and it is very good for us.  When it is in the fire, it crackles.  You can also put this in your bath.  It helps us be healthy

Then she showed us the medicine of SWEET GRASS  It is the hair of Mother Earth.  Its main purpose is to give us protection.  Lots of people put it in their cars or in their house to help protect them.  It is also used for smudging.  Sweet Grass is picked in June.  It also symbolizes the 7 holes in your head (ears, nose, eyes and mouth).

The third medicine that she shared with us is Sage.  Sage is also used for smudging.  Sage helps calm down your body and helps to change the mood in the room.

Then we looked at an instrument, which has little Grandfathers in it and it is made of deer skin.

She also shared another big Grandfather, which we all thought was very pretty.  It was very heavy.  We used it to close our circle today.

Alexander likes our sharing circle because we get to learn new things.
Chloie likes our sharing circle because we get to know more about our classmates.
Yuna likes our sharing circle because we get to learn about a different culture.
Abany likes our sharing circle because we get to learn new things about Pam.
Erik like our sharing circle because we get to see a lot of cool things.
Laina likes our sharing circle because we get to see things from different places.

Talking Circle

Since Monday, we have had Pam Peristy, one of our Divisions Indigenous Educators in our room.  We will be participating in "Talking Circles" over the next three weeks.  Pam start our days with us every morning.

We start our circle with passing around the Grandfather rock to open the circle.

Then Pam teaches us about a different topic and teachings
Yesterday we all created our own feathers.  When we did this we picked complements for each other.  It made us feel really special.

Today she shared the medicine of tobacco with us. She also shared a turtle shell.

We are learning so much about the Indigenous culture and traditions.  We are so excited to share this journey with you.

BELL LETS TALK DAY

Today all grade students participated in some activities to promote wellness and to create an awareness about our feelings.  We had discussions about healthy things we can do when we are angry, sad, scared and tired.  Also, we made a list of who we can talk to when we are feeling these things.

THIS WEEK!

This week we spent some time teaching our Kinder Buddies how to play card games, it was so much fun.  We love being with our Kinder Buddies.

This morning, all of the grade 3 students were separated into 5 different groups.  With Mme Smith, we did a tessellation project which you will get to see at conferences.  With Mme Janes, we made different pictures using cuisinard rods.  With Mme Boychuk we got to explore with the Osmo Tangrams.  With Mme Page, we played the game BUZZ BUZZ BOOM, this is a game were we use popsicle sticks with numbers in a can.  There are also sticks that have the words boom and buzz.  When you choose a stick with the word BOOM, everyone has to put their popsicle sticks back into the can.  When a BUZZ stick is picked, YOU have to put all of your popsicle sticks back in the can.  With Campbell.  we had to work on an open ended problem.

Gravitational Force

Today we learned about different forces.  We did an experiment to show how gravitational force works.
Joel: We learned how hard it was to hold a dictionary and then 4 atlases for 30 seconds
Diego: We learned about different types of friction.
Brooke: The 4 atlases was the hardest objects to hold for 30 seconds.
Amanda: The piece of paper was the easiest thing to hold.
Chloie: We learned that we can use friction to keep our hands warm in the winter.

Today in Math

We have begun to learn about growing patterns.  Today Mme had us build a pattern and as a class we figured out that for every figure the red trapeze would grow by one and the green triangle would always be 1 less then the red.  We were able to guess what the 25th figure would be based on the information that we knew about the pattern.
